This is a second version of "The Amurians - Struggle For Survival", I had written these a few months apart from eachother. I haven't yet decided which track this story is going to take, or if I will scrap both attempts and start over completely, or if this story should even be finished ...

The Amurians
Struggle for survival
Chapter one
The Flight

RE: The Amurians
Classification: TOP SECRET - GEI STAFF ONLY
Note: All GEI staff must be notified IMMEDIATELY!

All Amurians escaped GEI lab Hill city 1700 hours 13FEB2004 (Three males, four females
and seven children).

Amurians are sentient.

Amurians must be apprehended. Gene that created Amurians is dominant. Subsequent testing
of the gene proves that offspring of Amurians mated to wild tigers will carry over the mutation.
It is imperative that all Amurians be captured and returned to GEI lab or be terminated on sight
if necessary.

Background information: Amurians began as secret project to genetically reproduce the Amur
tiger for re-introduction into the wild. During initial phases of study, the tigers that were bred
with the gene developed unexplainable illnesses and died before gestation could complete.

Subsequent study and experiments followed. On 22JUL1968, female Amur tiger (Shielia) gave
birth to two male cubs, and another female Amur (Kheesara) gave birth to two female cubs and one male
cub. One of the males from Sheilia's litter died of illnesses while in the first stages of infancy.
Subsequently, Sheilia was again inseminated and produced a litter of three cubs, two males and a female.
These cubs survived through adulthood.

With successful results, more genetic experiments were performed, and gene mixing and
splicing was introduced. The mutation occurred 12DEC1972 when some females, inseminated with lot
#X44Z192QXLAMURGZZX2 gave birth to cubs that were human in appearance in that they
could stand/walk upright on their hind feet.

It is noted here that, in retrospect, the project should have been terminated at that point.
As well as carrying the human trait of walking upright, it showed as the cubs grew older that they were
quite intelligent. Some in the department speculate that they were more intelligent than homosapiens.
By Dr. Stevenson's account, the chief molecular biologist and geneticist assigned to Project Amur, these
were very special animals and he became very attached to them.

One of the male cubs, named Lazarus, was initially tested before one year of age. Signs of
Sentience were showing at that stage. It was deemed necessary by DR's Neidelman and Barshakov that the
project should explore this breakthrough.

At this stage Lazarus showed accelerated signs of mental development, and studies showed an
intelligence quotient rating, as far as we know comparable to humans at age six. However
these results have a known error factor due to the fact that they were designed to test pure homosapiens.
Lazarus also showed problem solving ability and reasoning ability in excess of an average six year old.

It should also be noted that the experiments were being closely monitored by the DOD which
was being fed documentation by an inside source. Variation Alpha was developed by DR. Ito Shatsimura,
a DOD informant, and planned for use by the military as soldiers. The DOD decided due to the fierce
nature and natural camoflauge of the tiger, that the species would be ideally suited to substitute
humans in zones too dangerous to risk lives or equipment.

These excerpts were taken from Dr. Stevenson's personal diary, and I thought that you should be
aware of just how intelligent and hence how dangerous the Amurians are. "When Lazarus was over a year
old, he started trying to imitate human speech, and it was thought to be the same action that a parrot
would do. But it became rapidly clear that he could understand human speech. Experiments with education
began on Lazarus in order to judge how well developed his psyche and intellect was. He learned
to read rapidly, and learned how to speak our language almost as quickly."

"One day, it became clear to me how well developed his mind was. I was playing chess, and he
was watching me attentively, as he always did. When I asked him if he was interested in chess, he
said he was and asked for a book on the subject. After just one week reading the book, he was able to
beat the best computer chess program in the department. It was clear that his problem solving skills and
strategic thinking ability was extremely advanced."

Names of subjects that escaped:

Lazarus (male age 12), Dynia (female age 9), Mark (male age 10), Angel (male age 10),
Lorana (female age 12) Star (female age 7), Leandro (male age 4), Luther (male age 3), Juile (female age 4),
Justin (male age 2), Jack (male age 5), Jennifer (female age 4), Ariel (female age 10), Lyssa (female age 12)

It should now be clear that the Amurians are a threat to national security and should be eliminated
or captured for further study.

"Dammit, why wasn't I told this before now?" he yelled as he slammed the teletype down on his desk "Get me Reidecker at Hill City on the phone...now!" Never before had Alan Green, director of GEI been so impatient. This was disturbing news, and he felt the hackles rise on the back of his neck.

"I've got you Hill City on 2332." came the voice from the intercom. Green picked up the phone and spoke rapidly, trying to hide the fear in his voice "Why wasn't I informed of this until now? Just what in hell are you doing about this, we can't have a bunch of sentient tigers running loose all over the country, now can we?"

"Good morning to you too, Al" replied Reidecker in his Texas drawl "calm down now, you know we are doing all we can to find 'em."

"That's fine, but why in hell'd you wait three years to tell me this?" Green asked in a hostile tone.

"Up 'til now, we considered it a matter of internal security..." Reidecker answered smoothly in his deep voice, but was cut off by Green.

"Internal security?" sneered Green "Need I remind you that we are all on the same team here? And just who do you think signs your paycheck? You better find those goddam tabbies and quick. Jesus Christ Jack, three years... do you know how far they may have gotten in three years?"

"We are doing all we can to recover them."

"Well, with Lazarus running around leading them, they are going to be near impossible to find. I'll mobilize security here and have a full team headed your way within twenty four hours. I want copies of all Stevenson's files waiting for me when I get there." Green growled over the phone.

Reidecker took a long pause "Y....you're coming here? I assure you there is no need..." Reidecker continued nervously.

"Just have the files ready when I get there, understand?"

"Yes sir..." The reciever went dead in Reideckers' hand. He wiped the sweat off his forhead and looked out his window. Alan Green wasn't known for his easy temper, and Reidecker knew that his coming to Hill City would put the pressure on everyone there.

This is just a teaser really, sorry - that's all there is for now of this one!
